volubilis/meknes
A UNESCO World Heritage site, Volubilis is an ancient Amazigh city founded in the 1st Century and once the capital of the ancient Mauretania kingdom. Rome ruled here from the 1st century till about 285 when the Amazigh decided they’d had enough. There’s more to this story than we can say here, which is why we provide links like this: Volubilis. Walk through the ancient streets, see where they made their olive oil, look into the public baths, the dining rooms and walk under the triumphal arch. It’s mind-blowing!
Afterward, we hop in the car for a short drive to Meknes, named for the tribe of Amazigh people called Miknasa who originally hailed from Tunisia, and who dominated the area and much of eastern Morocco beginning in the 8th century. Another one of Morocco’s imperial cities, it’s a journey back in time with a rich history, and again, a helpful link: Meknes.
We leave Fes around 9:00 or 10:00 in the morning. We can arrange a guided walking tour of these two sites for you, or you’re welcome to explore on your own.
